Language and Arts Classes.

Chinmaya Mission is for family participation. When you say family, it extends beyond the people who dwell under one roof. Family includes Grand Parents, Uncles, Aunties, and Cousins both here and back home. By choice or destiny, we landed in the country of plenty in many ways but short on time and family bonds. The generation of our children is becoming less aware of the relations with elders and their warmth patronage. As we as parents started looking, what is the main reason, it’s the communication. Communicating with grand parents, uncles, aunties, and cousins has the main obstacle - in the form of language. Once we know the problem, finding solution is our duty. As a small step towards that effort, we started offering classes in Indian languages along with Indian culture to Balavihar children.

Main emphasis in these classes is on spoken language. Teaching Indian language for the children born and raised in western hemisphere is a challenging task. Language teachers are making a commendable job in preparing the right content for each class. Class covers the simple words. Words used daily life, words about family relations, classic rhymes, poems and some fun games with languages. As children learn words, they are introduced to reading and writing alphabets and scripts. Once they are comfortable with alphabets they move on compound letters and word formations and reading simple sentences. As children learn the basic stuff then they will be introduced to the geography, cultural significance of the language and the region it is being used. As we move into future, we will add more content and advance language features.
To learn all the interesting stuff, we group children based on the proficiency and then by age and the class size. Each class is taught by two or more teachers (based on class size). Teachers encourage children’s participation in the class and accept parents help as and when needed. Children are observed for their progress through tests and can be regrouped to different classes as and when needed.
For the year 2007-2008 - Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu classes are offered for Balavihar children. Sanskrit and Vedic Math are offered for Adults and older children. BharataNatyam and Kuchipudi Dance are offered as part of Arts classes. For languages and Arts classes, minimum grade is K.G.
